How to create job ads that will attract the right candidates

The job ad is the first chance for your company to attract the right people for the position. It’s also one of the most important pieces of content you create because it’s how people learn about your job openings. The right job ad is a key part of attracting quality candidates, so make sure it reflects who you are as a company and what you’re looking for in an employee.

If it’s true that 90% of candidates apply only to jobs that interest them, then job ads are a powerful tool for attracting the right applicants. But how can you make sure the right candidates see your ad in a way that attracts them? The answer might surprise you: create a well-written and targeted ad.

1 Write a compelling headline

A good headline will tell readers exactly why they should read further and what they’ll find inside. If you’re not sure where to start, ask yourself: Why should this person be interested in me? What can I offer them? Are there other opportunities at this time?

It’s tempting to write an ad that says “We’re looking for a new employee” but this will probably result in a lot of candidates who are not a good fit for your company. Instead, try to find the right words that describe your ideal candidate. For example, if you’re looking for someone with a particular skill set, such as marketing experience, then include those words in the ad.

2. Include a strong visual element with your headline

A simple image or video can help grab people’s attention and make them want to learn more about what your company does or offer them insight into who exactly you are as a brand (such as an infographic).

3. Be specific

Be clear about what your company does and what kind of job you’re hiring for. You want potential candidates to know exactly what they are applying for so they don’t waste their time applying when they don’t fit the requirements of the position.

It’s not enough to say “you must have experience working with X.” Instead, let readers know exactly what experience you’re looking for, and how it relates to their own experience.

You don’t have to go into great detail about every single aspect of the job, but it’s important that you give it some thought and put some thought into what makes up the core of your company’s operations.

For example, if you’re looking for an admin assistant then make sure you include things like how many hours they’ll need to work each week and what their key responsibilities will be (i.e., answering phones). This will help ensure that only people who are really interested apply – and even then only if they’re perfect fits!

4. Use action verbs

Action verbs are important because they make it clear what you want someone to do in your job ad. For instance, if you’re looking for a candidate with a particular skill set then you’ll want to use words such as ‘skilled’ or ‘experienced’.

If you want someone who’s creative then use words like ‘creative’, ‘creative thinker’, or ‘creative communicator’. The words “hire”, “apply”, “interview” etc are all great examples of action verbs that tell candidates exactly what they need to do next – apply online or by phone, etc.

5. Make it easy for candidates to apply.

If you want candidates to apply, include a link in your job posting that takes them directly to your application form. Having a single location where candidates can apply makes it easier for them to do so, and it also makes it easier for you as the employer if there are fewer applications submitted.
