Exploring Chennai like a Local

Since the time I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by the beauty of South India. It was why I jumped with joy when one of my client meetings came up in Chennai. After all, I always dreamt of visiting this beautiful city.

Immediately after landing here, I booked a convenient airport taxi and headed straight to the office to finish my meetings as I could not wait to explore the city. As soon as my conference ended, I called my friend who resides in Chennai, and we headed to explore the city as locals.

Below are some of the top places we explored in the city.

●       Marina Beach

The first place we visited on our Chennai trip was Marina beach. Extending 13 kilometres from the famous St. George Fort to Mahabalipuram, this picturesque beach enjoys the constant spotlight of both visitors and locals for being the second-longest natural beach across the globe.

The ancient lighthouse, aquarium, park, and other sculptures add to the charm of this beach. Also, after taking a peaceful stroll here, we enjoyed the lip-smacking fish curry at one of the food stalls here.

●       Dakshina Chitra

Dakshina Chitra, the famous living-history museum depicting the historical value of Tamil culture, was our next stop. It is a small village built on 10 acres that hold beautiful replicas of traditional South Indian houses.

This place further exhibits folk performing arts, crafts, and architecture and I got exhilarated to see the typical Tamil house, their utensils, fisherman’s life, and different fabrics. Also, the regular events of classical dances and musical concerts are other eye-catching attractions at this tourist spot.

●       The Ripon building

The Ripon Building, commemorated with an ancient value, was constructed in 1913. Named after one Governor-General of British ruled India, this site is a well-known and must-visit landmark of Chennai.

Situated near the Chennai central railway station, the mechanical chiming clock is the principal attraction at the Ripon building. Also, the enchanting white structure depicts an ideal example of the neoclassical architectural style.

●       Guindy National Park

A striking addition to Chennai’s architectural ambience is the Guindy national park. It is home to an expansive variety of mammals, birds, trees, reptiles, amphibians and the likes. Also, located in the city’s heart, this stunning garden is well known for its snake park with pythons, cobras, and various other snake species.

●       The broken bridge

After crumpling in 1977, this broken bridge is marked eerie and haunted. My friend informed me that this spot had become a famous tourist attraction in Chennai due to the historical destruction and the haunted stories. People from far and near visit this place to glimpse its spectacular structure and witness the mesmerizing sunset from the beach.

●       Birla Planetarium

The Birla Planetarium near Anna University was our last stop, and being a science lover, I’ve always wanted to visit this place. After touring this place, I can say that this is unquestionably the best way to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the moon and stars. Apart from the moon and star watching, I loved the radio-visual programs on astronomy that exhibit the Solar system, sky and seasons, the cycle of stars, and comets.

One of my best decisions was booking a call taxi in Chennai with an experienced driver during my trip. He not only made our trip hassle-free by chauffeuring us around the city but was also a perfect guide during our sightseeing.

With this, my adventurous trip to Chennai came to an end. But let me tell you that coming here and visiting these beautiful places gave me memories to cherish for a lifetime.
