The oral custom of the Vedas (Śrauta) consists of a number of pathas, “recitations” or methods of chanting the Vedic mantras. Such traditions of Vedic chant are sometimes thought of the oldest unbroken oral custom in existence, the fixation of the Vedic texts (samhitas) as preserved relationship to roughly the time of Homer (early Iron Age).
