Utsavam
========
The utsavam in Guruvayur is within the month of Kumbham (Feb-Mar) and the celebrations are unfold over a interval of 10 days. The competition begins with the hoisting of the temple flag on the dwajasthamba on Pooyam day and ends with the holy dip (Aarattu) on Anizham day. A particular occasion through the utsavam is the elephant race. The Guruvayur Devaswom has about 45 elephants now, all donated by devotees. No description of the elephants on this temple is full with out mentioning Padmanabhan and Kesavan. Padmanabhan was a really tall elephant and had an imposing bearing. He would enable no different elephant to hold the Thidambu. There are various tales about his kindness, devotion and loyal loyalty to the Lord. In appreciation of his companies, a gold chain was introduced to him. An odd spectacle was seen within the Guruvayur temple within the 12 months 1931, the day Padmanabhan died: the sandal paste with which the Lord was adorned break up into two items and fell down. The 2 tusks and tooth of Padmanabhan are stored in Guruvayur.

Kesavan was donated by Raja of Nilambur and got here to Guruvayur in 1922. He learnt from Padmanabhan the way in which he ought to conduct himself as a servant of the Lord. He was about 11 ft tall and would increase his entrance leg solely when the Thidambu is to be mounted. All different riders, together with his mahout, needed to mount from the rear, utilizing his hind leg. He was honoured with the title Gajaraja. In 1976, on Navami, he fell ailing through the Sriveli. On the Dasami evening, he used the ingesting water (stored for him) to wash and to scrub his physique and stood trying longingly within the path of the Deity whom he had served for a very long time. The morning of Ekadasi dawned. On the day Lord Krishna gave Vishwarupa Darshan to Arjuna, Kesavan lay prostrate on the bottom along with his trunk stretched in direction of the Lord. The Lord had given moksha to the Gajaraja, simply earlier than the Srikovil opened. Guruvayur Devaswom has erected a life measurement statue of Kesavan in one in all their relaxation homes and his dying anniversary is noticed on Ekadasi day.
