Om (written universally as ॐ; in Devanagari as ओं oṃ [õː], औं auṃ [ə̃ũ], or ओ३म् om [õːm]) is a mantra and mystical Sanskrit sound of Hindu origin (geographically India and Nepal), sacred and vital in varied Dharmic religions akin to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The syllable can be known as omkara (ओंकार oṃkāra) or aumkara (औंकार auṃkāra), actually “om syllable”, and in Sanskrit it’s typically known as praṇava, actually “that which is sounded out loudly”.

Om or Aum can be written ओ३म् (o̿m [õːːm]), the place ३ is pluta (“3 times as lengthy”), indicating a size of three morae (that’s, the time it takes to say three syllables)—an overlong nasalised close-mid again rounded vowel—although there are different enunciations adhered to in acquired traditions. It’s positioned at the start of most Hindu texts as a sacred incantation to be intoned at the start and finish of a studying of the Vedas or previous to any prayer or mantra. It’s used on the finish of the invocation to the god being sacrificed to (anuvakya) as an invite to and for the latter to partake of.
