(Reuters) – Following are some notable quotes from Mikhail Gorbachev, the final Soviet chief, who died on Tuesday on the age of 91.

On assembly his spouse Raisa (from interview with U.S. Vogue, 2013):

“In the future we took one another by the hand and went for a stroll within the night. And we walked like that for our complete life.”

First public remarks on the Chernobyl nuclear energy station catastrophe, delivered on Russian tv, Might 14, 1986, 18 days after the explosion:
