Everyone knows that real men drink single-malt whiskey. William Faulkner once said, “There is no bad whiskey. Some whiskeys are superior to others.” Whether you prefer Chivas Regal or Johnnie Walker Red, you can use that delicious whiskey to make a mean mixed drink. (The word “cocktail” doesn’t sound masculine enough.) So, if you’re not up for a straight shot of Jack Daniels whiskey or want something different, try some of these recipes. Whiskey Sour – It doesn’t get any simpler or more classic than this drink. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine three parts: whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and 1 part Gomme syrup. Pour into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with a maraschino cherry or an orange slice.

Manhattan – Another must-try classic. It is one of the oldest cocktails and one of the first to use vermouth as a modifier. There are several variations, but the traditional recipe calls for 2 ounces of rye whiskey, 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth, and 2-3 dashes of bitters. In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine the ingredients and stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry. Add a dash of dry vermouth and garnish with a lemon twist to make a dry Manhattan. A perfect Manhattan will contain equal parts sweet and dry vermouth.

Mint Julep – Want a taste of the South? A Mint Julep is the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, and approximately 80,000 are served during the race. Muddle 4-5 mint sprigs and 1/2 ounce simple syrup in an old-fashioned double glass. Then add 2 1/2 ounces of bourbon and fill with crushed ice. Stir well and garnish with a mint sprig.

Rusty Nail – This mixed drink may not sound appealing, but it makes an excellent scotch drink. Try different single-malt scotch brands to spice up this recipe. It’s straightforward to make. Pour 1 and 1/2 ounces of your favorite Scotch and 3/4 ounces of Drambuie into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Stir well and garnish with a lemon twist. To reduce the sweetness of the drink, add less Drambuie.

Rob Roy – You might have heard your grandfather order this drink. It’s not something you see every day. But, if you liked the Manhattan and Scotch whiskey, you’d enjoy this one. Combine 1 and 1/2 ounces of Scotch, 14 ounces of sweet vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass. Stir well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

John Collins – Similar to Tom Collins, but this one prefers bourbon. Pour 1 1/2 ounces of bourbon, 1 ounce of lemon juice, and 1/2 ounce of sugar syrup into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with club soda after thoroughly stirring. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice. If you prefer, you can substitute a sour mix for the lemon juice and syrup.
